From the artist Dumile Feni

Silence, 2012 Bronze Sculpture by the South African Artist Dumile Feni. The death in exile of one of Africa’s greatest contemporary artists was a blow to South African art. Dumile Feni, born 21 May 1942 left South Africa to go into exile in 1968, after the powerful statements made in his work resulted in harassment by the apartheid security forces. Feni contributed hugely not only to the African 20th century art world but also to the struggle against apartheid. His works show anguished figures, often contorted as if in immense pain. The figures are clearly African because according to the artist:

“My subjects are Africans because they are my people, but my message, the idea I am bringing to put across has nothing to do with racialism”.

Notes from a Bob Marley

Man to man is so unjust, children:
Ya don't know who to trust.
Your worst enemy could be your best friend,
And your best friend your worse enemy.

Some will eat and drink with you,
Then behind them su-su 'pon you.
Only your friend know your secrets,
So only he could reveal it.
And who the cap fit, let them wear it!
Who the cap fit, let them wear it!

One eye feels, the other Sees

We sent the painter Barbara von Enger this divine image last week, and, this is what she had to say: Can you imagine a world without light, colour, form and art? I think not. What I especially love about this image is the almost yellowing colour of the light, which has a beautiful subliminal effect on the eye.

Words to grab and Go

"Apart from creating, inventing, sorting, shifting and painting, the public today expect the artist to do the work of prime ministers, political leaders, doctors, hedge fund managers and the social worker."
- Quote by the German/Jamaican artist, Barbara von Enger, in conversation with a guest at her recent exhibition in Paris.
