On the role of the Artist in Society

Art is a commentary on what's happening in society, be it music, painting or literature. For example, if Lil Wayne and Drake rap about "bitches" it simply means that women behave like "bitches" in their immediate society. Isn't this what art is about? The artist creates first and foremost only for himself, and trust the public accepts it. Have always wondered why do people find it repulsive when the artist hold a mirror up to society?
