Man Ray Portraits

We slowly dragged ourselves out of bed on a wintry February morning last week, to get down to the National Portrait Gallery in Trafalgar Square for the first museum show of portraits by the surrealist photographer Man Ray.

Luckily it was well worth the prospect of frostbite, for the gallery walls were covered in jewels of Man Ray’s career. There was the iconic ‘Le violin d’Ingres’ of 1924 – an image of an enticing female back, and then there was the solarised portrait of the Surrealist muse Lee Miller, herself an important and groundbreaking photojournalist who invented the process of polarisation with Man Ray, and was of course his sometime lover.
